There is a glorious history of weaving in Bangladesh. The art of weaving has developed over the course of thousands of years, through discovery and experimentation. It involves the production of fabric or cloth by interlacing two distinct sets of yarns or threads in a right angle. The tradition of weaving cloth by handloom constitutes one of the valuable aspects of Bangladesh culture and heritage. From British colonial rule weaving industry is famous in Bengal. Hand-woven Muslin, Jamdani, raw silk as well as refined silks, a wide range of Khadi, Katan, Benarashi and extremely fine cotton have earned a place of honor for the artisans of Bengal all over the world.
The growth of mill weaving loom age capacity was slow that was 2% annually during 1947-56 but was faster and around 4.6% annually during 1957-72. Loom age capacity was more or less the same until 1983 when privatization of nationalized mills was undertaken. Loom age capacity reduced to 3.9 thousands in 1999 from 6.3 thousands in 1983 as the old obsolete looms went out of operation.
