Introduction:
A technical textile is a textile product manufactured for non-aesthetic purposes, where function is the primary criterion. In the initial time of textile manufacturing, men used to produce clothing which were required to be civilized. They used to put emphasis on decorative and aesthetic properties of clothing during manufacturing. But, day by day their demand changed dramatically. They began to put emphasis on technical and functional properties along with decorative and aesthetic properties. So, textile can be can be classified into two sectors according to its applications. They are traditional and technical textile. The industries which produce traditional dresses, curtains, blankets, lingerie etc. products to fulfill general and aesthetic demands are called traditional textile industries and this sector is known as traditional Textile sector. On the other hand, the industries which produce products that can meet up specific demand like protection from cold, bad weather, extreme situation etc. are called technical textile industries. This sector is known as technical textile sector.

Raw Materials of Technical Textiles:
Raw materials used for making technical textile are as follows –

  • Natural fibers – Cotton, Wool, Jute, Silk etc.
  • Synthetic polymers – PES, PA, PAN, PP etc.
  • Regenerated fibers – Rayon and acetate fiber.
  • Minerals – Asbestos.
  • Metals – Carbon, steel etc.

Global Technical Textile Market Size
Technical textiles have seen an upward trend globally in the recent years due to improving economic conditions. Technological advancements, increase in end-use applications, cost effectiveness, durability, user-friendliness and eco-friendliness of technical textiles has led to the upsurge of its demand in the global market. Indutech, Mobiltech, Packtech, Buildtech and Hometech together represent 2/3rd of the global market in value.

The demand for technical textiles was pegged at $ 165 billions in the year 2018 and is expected to grow up to $220bn by 2025, at a CAGR of 4% from 2018-25. The Asia-Pacific has been leading the technical textiles sector by capturing 40% of the global market, while North America and Western Europe stand at 25% & 22% respectively.

Asia-Pacific has seen a tremendous growth in this sector and captures the largest market share due to rapid urbanisation and technological advancements in medical, automobile and construction industries. This is further catalysed by easy production, low cost labor and conducive government policy support.

European Union was leading in consumption from 2007-13, owing to Techtex producers proximity to large European car manufacturers. The product nomination process was unique to Europe and led to the presence of European Techtex products in different export markets worldwide. European Techtex manufacturers were able to establish a strong and unique position due to their R&D efforts and operational efficiency. However, production declined since 2013, particularly in France and Spain, due to weak demand in the automobile and construction sector.

Technical textiles exports increased by 28.4% in 10 years
In the Global Technical Textile Foreign Trade 2019 Assessment, which was created by the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters’ Association (ITHIB) based on the data of 2019, the dimension of trade in this segment is revealed. Accordingly, global technical textile exports decreased by 3.1% in 2019 and reached a value of 107.1 billion USD. On the other hand, it is noted that the sector has achieved an export increase of 28.4% in the last 10 years. China is the biggest seller in technical textiles exports. China took a 25.5% share in global technical textiles exports, achieving an export value of $27.3 billion. China is followed by Germany with a share of 8.4%, the USA with 8% and Italy with a share of 3.9%. While Vietnam had the highest increase in technical textile exports with 20.9% last year, Mexico experienced the hardest decrease with 11.9%.

Turkey was ranked as the 19th biggest supplier of technical textiles with 1.6% share in exports of technical textiles in 2019. Turkey’s exports in 2019 decreased by 1.7% compared to the previous year fell to 1.7 billion USD. 50.4% of the total technical textile exports of Turkey was carried out to EU countries. Here, Germany ranks first with an 8.1% share and 140 million USD in imports.
