Measurement of Button Liner or Ligne:
Measurement of button size is really confusing. Is it measured in Millimeters? Inches? Ligne? I will clarify in this article. In garment industry, production merchandiser has to know clearly about button liner calculation process for smooth bulk production. It is very important to know measurement of a button for using button in a garment. If you are not a professional person in garment industry then you will feel a great problem when you select a button for use your required garment.
Button sizes are recognized worldwide with “L” or “ligne” which is a French term to measure length. A ligne measurement starts at 1 and is abbreviated to 1L. ligne is a linear unit (1/40 inch) used to measure diameter of buttons. The L is measured in 0.025 millimeters or 0.635 inches. The L is measured across the diameter of the button using the widest portion.
To give you an idea of what a ligne means in terms of button size, 40 ligne (40L) is the same as 1 inch. Or 25mm. And 1 ligne (1L) is equivalent to 0.635mm. For clear conception you can see below button measurement index.
Button Liner = Diameter of required Button in mm ÷ 1.6
40 Line = 1 inch = 2.54 cm = 25.4 mm
1 Line = 0.635 MM
