Dana Brooks’ straightforward strategy for training 60 employees at a manufacturing business was to video all the SOPs. The team took care of all 200 SOPs. A blunt result was found 6 months later with use. Not many people were watching them. In a textile plant, garment unit, or home-textile operation, the same temptation can appear when teams want one format for every machine, process, and handoff. This is exactly why an SOP video for garment industry operations needs a filter before production.
The problem wasn’t that video was failing. The company had unnecessarily gone for videos, for a short written procedure would have sufficed. A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a process that has been standardized to perform a routine task. Some of the procedures may be performed with movement and narration. Some of them have to be searchable and easy to scan. Others need to be printed as well. That mix is common in textile and apparel plants, where different teams often need different formats for the same process.

This guide will answer four questions to determine which SOPs are suitable for video, which are better as written and what to do with the short list.
More Engaging Is Not a Good Enough Reason
When the justification is that people would rather watch than read, it’s easy to approve video. Sounds fair enough, until the organisation has 200 videos to keep up to date. What matters more is if video addresses a problem that the written SOP doesn’t address well. For textile and apparel teams, that may mean a setup, calibration, or quality-check step that is hard to explain in a text block.
A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a repeatable method for performing a task. In practice the document might have several roles. It can be used for the learning of a new employee. Experienced worker can come back to repeat one step. Supervisor may need a print out reference during a handoff process. Request a password reset SOP. An experienced help-desk worker might only need to write down three steps and the proper internal link. Finding it difficult to retrieve when expanded to a four minute video.
Let’s consider now a procedure, in which a new operator has to see several physical actions in the correct order. While text can give information about the sequence, viewing the sequence may answer some questions the text does not address. The format should be deserving. A garment finishing step or a loom-threading sequence is a good example.
Four Conditions Tell You When Video Is Worth the Work
It can be as simple as a filter. For each SOP, score it under four conditions. If a procedure fits two or more, then it fits on the video shortlist.
1. People perform the procedure often:
There’s a shift in the economics when there’s a shift in the frequency. If performed only once a shift, there will be an opportunity for confusion and shortcuts. It can also reveal inconsistencies in supervisors’ teaching. A helpful video can help onboard and provide refresher training without forcing someone to provide the same explanation repeatedly. That matters in sewing lines, packing areas, and machine-setting routines where new hires cycle through often.
A procedure which is performed annually is different. If there are no serious consequences of the error, a clear written reference might be enough.
2. Getting it wrong has serious consequences:
An error on an expense sheet and the error with hazardous equipment isn’t the same training issue. If the work involves safety issues, OSHA’s training requirements can be used as a guide to determine the level of attention a procedure merits. If an error can harm someone, damage equipment, contaminate a product, ruin a fabric lot, or cease production then the training format should be scrutinized.
Video can be helpful for people to understand sequence and context. It should not be used as a measure of an individual’s ability to do the job right. It also should not be a substitute for hands-on instruction where it is required.
3. The action is awkward to explain in text:
Some procedures are naturally suited for a page. However, ‘Open the settings menu, select Accounts and choose Add User’ is very easy to explain without the production team.
It’s more difficult to describe physical, manual work. It can take a full paragraph to describe the hand position, the order in which the parts are to be played, the location of a part or what is considered properly aligned. The same can be true for fabric handling, sewing adjustments, pattern alignment, or machine threading. In some instances, a simple visual may be able to express the same message more quickly. That’s a good reason to use video. The image provides details that the written text does not convey.
4. Turnover keeps creating the same training need:
A stable team can absorb a surprising amount of knowledge informally. A department hiring new people every month cannot rely on one supervisor repeating the same explanation forever. In apparel and textile plants with seasonal or shift-based hiring, the value of reusable training is even clearer.
The higher the turnover, the greater the value of the reusability of the training, especially if the training procedure itself is rather stable. An outdated video every couple weeks is another maintenance issue. Turnover is only useful when a person also owns the source SOP and is aware when the video should get an update.
Plenty of SOPs Should Stay Written
In a company, converting the entire library once the project to make a video is launched can seem efficient. Usually, it is not. Written SOPs are sometimes more effective than a lesson when the worker needs a reference. They’re easy to use and print. That is especially useful for line-clearance checklists, maintenance logs, and QC reference sheets.
In general, it is easier to modify the text on the page rather than in an existing video.
- Administrative procedures that are relatively quick and involve a few obvious steps.
- SOPs that are lengthy and contain codes, values, tables or contacts.
- Frequently changing procedures
- Different tasks that are already done by experienced staff who need a gentle reminder.
- Simple and easy-to-scan approval or escalation processes
It doesn’t necessarily have to be text or video. A few minutes video can give the orientation and a written SOP can be used for controlled reference. In many textile operations, that combination works well for changeovers and machine settings. Video can also cover simply the one step that workers consistently fail to do correctly. This is typically a more efficient method for utilizing production time than reproducing the document on screen.
Score the Library Before Anyone Starts Recording
A simple table makes the shortlist visible. That approach works just as well for a textile or apparel SOP library.

If there are two or more “yes” responses, the SOP makes the video shortlist. It is not a safety requirement, or a compliance rating. This is a production filter. It is not a substitute for any legal or safety-training requirement. The table is just a way to provide a team with someplace reasonable to begin. That’s the problem about “convert everything. Build the Shortlist Before Choosing How to Produce It
Production should come after selection, not before it. One option is simply to record someone doing or explaining the task. For a software process, a lightweight screen-recording tool such as Loom can capture the walkthrough. It’s not the same with physical work.
It might be better to use a phone or camera as viewers are going to want to see the actual workspace. That is often the case in weaving rooms, cutting tables, dyeing areas, or sewing floors. Some Procedures Still Need a Real Camera
Usually a procedure that is based on physical technique should demonstrate the technique. Real footage is sometimes required for close up work at equipment. Also, a safety demonstration in which the learner needs to gain firsthand experience of what happens. This is especially true for fabric handling, machine-threading, loom settings, or sewing-method demonstrations.
A step that is written can be explained with the use of a generated presenter. It cannot replace footage when the action itself is the lesson. A described explanation of how a machine works is not quite the same as witnessing the right hand position or how equipment works during a procedure.
If this is the case, videotape the actual process. The written SOP can be used as a primary source and then the video can be used as a demonstration of what cannot be done in the written SOP. The generated material can still be used in the explanation, but should not replace the physical evidence that learners need to observe. For example, in dyeing, finishing, or maintenance work, the real process matters more than a narrated summary.
Before converting a full SOP library, take a small sample of real procedures and score them against the four conditions. If the sample includes textile tasks such as machine setup, fabric inspection, or line changeover, the results will be even easier to judge.
