Garments Trims or Trimmings:
The materials or components except the main fabric used in the garments are called garment trimmings. Besides the main fabric, various additional things are used for making the garments. Trimmings include Sewing Thread, Button, Zipper, Velcro, Label, Shoulder pad, Linings, Interlinings, etc. Trims are used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the garment. Trimmings are of two types namely visible trimmings and invisible trimmings. Some trimmings are used for functional purposes and some are for decorative purposes. Trimmings are often used to complete an outfit and are chosen to specifically complement the wearer’s look. But to become garment trimmings some properties should keep of that materials or components.
Types of Garments Trimmings:
There are two types of garments trimmings:
A. Visible trimmings: Visible trimmings can be seen from outside of the garments e.g. Button, Sewing Thread, Zipper, Velcro, etc.
B. Invisible trimmings: They can not be seen from outside of the garments e.g. Interlining.
Requirements to become Garment Trimmings:
Trimmings may be of textile or non-textile materials. They should be selected very carefully to get the desired performances. Required properties of garment trimmings are described below:
1. Life time:
The life time of garments and that of the trimmings should be equal. Otherwise the trims will be faded or spoiled by washing, ironing, pressing or rubbing.
2. Shrinkage:
The appearance of the garment may be hampered if the trimmings shrink due to washing, ironing and pressing. For example: seam pucker will be result if the sewing thread shrinks. So the shrink ability of the dress material and the trims should be checked earlier.
3. Color fastness:
The fastness properties of trimmings should be good. The color of trims should not be faded due to washing or exposure to sunlight. The appearance of garment will be hampered if the trimmings materials are faded.
4. Rust:
Where items are made from metal, the main constraint is the problem of rusting. The button, clamps, rivets, etc. may be made up of metals like iron, brass, steel, etc. If rusting occurs then they will create spot on garments. So to avoid this problem the metal trims should be electroplated or they should be made up of non-rusting materials.
5. Comfort ability:
Trimmings should not create any uncomfortable feeling to the wearer. They should be hygienic as well as to cause no skin disease.
